Celebrity Diarrhoea!

Had to write this to get it out of my system!

These days when the economy is on a sort of stand still & not much movement is happening on the policy decision making after a few biggies like Demonetisation, GST, Jio, Patanjali – it looks like the media especially the Digital Media is hell bent on making someone a Hero & creating content around them! They are making anything around a movie ‘star’ or a cricket ‘star’ a national event & wish everyone involved to be following every hook, step, twitch, bowel movement or what not! Am Sorry! Spare me the least!

When I open my newspaper – I want to read actual news in politics, economics, public policies, education, rural reformation, science or even art, literature. But this celebrity worship syndrome (CWS) that the media seems to be suffering from & want to infect the remaining sane audience is just not cool, so very unhealthy.

It has reached to the level that am afraid of opening my Google Feed News, Youtube Feed, Various News Channel Feeds, websites – am also sceptical to meet some of my wannabe friends & other immature people, who cannot help but discuss Celebrities & their wonderful lives. How their lives are perfect & how we are made to feel worse. Am sorry again, I refuse to be part of this shanghais! #SpareMe again!

I anyways have started to lose a lot of respect for the internet generation & the Smartphone generation (15-28 yrs old, well provided for the first 3 needs on Hierarchy Pyramid) who seem to be hell bent on only following what looks, sounds, appears “COOL” & have stopped understanding the harsh parts of sacrifice, hardwork, dedication, mental toughness, focus, attention span deficiency! But they are hell bent ambitious & know how to get their work done.

Current Digital Media & this “COOL” generation are a lethal combination who shall take our social, mental, physical, financial, economical sensibilities to a quick down trail very soon! #SpareMe

Mithali Raj – Second Blog in 6 mths!

This article made me write a 2nd blog on her!

I feel so much common with her that its difficult to describe in words. The struggle, standing up for self, not giving up on one’s values, keeping parents & performance first – these are the simple but strong values that middle class girls in India from 80s & early 90s were brought up with.

So many of them gave in to marriage, materialism, shallowness for reasons unknown! Yet it feels so RIGHT when a few of them make it to the TOP & wish to be raring to go even more – Mithali Raj, you inspire me to not give up despite all hardships & disappointments and am most thankful to you for that.

Second, you inspire me how to carry myself with grit & humbleness!

Am sure you inspire so many others a lot more – my wish & pray that girls in India find a permanent place for sports in their daily lives for keeping fit & personality development. Also I hope more parents encourage their girls to not give up on sports!

Emotional Intelligence – Back to My Fav Topic

This one is never ending – isn’t it 🙂

These days have been weird, very weird – perhaps all uncomfortable & pushing/evolving phases are! I now recall being in lots of them – Phew!
However the intensity of the same & its impact can vary.

Perhaps best learning from my experience has been to let things happen while giving your best at it & expect nothing in return – Let Go of expectations, Don’t focus on what happens next or the results but just focus on current Moment & Live everyday as it is!

Its easier said than done – but its a methodological process if one can learn to master it, almost like working on a master piece patiently or running a marathon or working on a relationship!

One has to slowly & carefully identify which are the things that makes you upset – is it the thought of going to office, is it the thought of making dinner, is it the thought of travelling, it it the thought of working on something intensive. So WHAT?

Once you identify the WHAT, identify the WHY !

And then focus on Solution & Be Patient about it to come! That is it.. There is no two way about the last part coz you may think that since you have identified the What, Why & Solution – everything should fall into place but you have to Let the Universe do its work.

However much it may hurt but do not look down upon yourself & keep your head high!

Future Push – Tech & Innovation!

Its matrix described gave me a lot of confidence & clarity on how to think for products & future roadmaps for yourself or company or society. Again Sharing here :

Most of us (94%) are doing “Basic research” in this space especially at the middle & lower management level.

Some of us (5.9%) are doing “Sustaining Innovation” as Product Managers, Leaders & even in space which is not so well defined from problem statement or domain per se but we assume that this is the solution or expected world so lets go for it.

Very Few of us (0.1%) are trying to do Disruptive or Breakthrough Innovation. Elon Musk for sure lies in the Breakthrough space and so are some of the esteemed scientists in the technology, literature, economics, art, media, etc. spaces.
Breakthrough is really difficult to achieve of all – requires huge research, money, persistence, sharp focus, dedication, sacrifice @ personal, health, etc. level
Disruptive is still achievable if one has fair control on various variables like talent, opportunity, business model, money, knowledge.

So if I have to rate the various models in chronological order, I will say Basic Research + Sustaining Innovation are “all right to have” like the Must Have but not sufficient.
Disruptive is achievable while Breakthrough is really tough but yet possible 🙂
Anyone wanting to excel in any sphere/industry/role should have first two for sure as a constant practice like eating, breathing and achieve disruptive time & again (like 5 – 10 in lifetime) while keep aiming for Breakthrough as it will be extremely rare – one, if you are very lucky then two.

If you have achieved one break- through, then remaining three still are important but your job is done – that’s the AIM ! Great brands, companies, products are known for that one discovery. E.g. Infosys by NRN, Disney by Walk, Apple by Jobs amongst many others.

Some people achieve disruptive time & again e.g. Actors going for 100Mn then 200Mn, etc. marks for box office returns. Or great PMs able to fish out great products time & again, can’t call any names right now 🙂 E.g. Google as a company maybe

So here’s the mantra – keep adding to yourself with the first 3 & make yourself a Break through as a person or create a Break through company or work on a Break Through Product. Mostly in my case, first & last are more probably while middle one is a distant dream 🙂 Amen to all though !

Today, let us discuss the importance of “Art of Organising” to be relevant in today’s Management Space.

The Optimum Art of Organising & Planning to ensure efficiency however not causing too much delay & redundancy is a difficult Art to Manage.
It requires attention to detail, understanding of situations + people, right amount of patience to hold your horses or speak at the most opportune time. Above all it required alot of maturity, analytical skills & calmness to manage all the situations.

In my understanding, this is quite the skillset a qualified MBA is supposed to have to be an effective manager & leader. In same breath let me mention the subjects of MBA course in my understanding prove to be most critical for a leader in due course of their professional careers :

  • Organisational Behaviour : Though its difficult for young MBA minds to absorb & estimate the impact of all the topics in a class of 20+ hours, it is the subject which cuts across all students & is applicable throughout the careers every single moment
  • Game Theory : If one subject can teach the outcome probability best then it is this subject – one should always be prepared & calculating to know the best outcome possible in every situation/event for themselves or colleagues or business, etc. Its quite the lovely topic
  • Operational Research : This subject teaches the art of balancing different sets, values, variables, constants to ultimately reach your optimum goal of efficient results.

There are other subjects worth mentioning though matter a lot on how they are taught – Managerial Skills, Leadership Skills, Strategy, Accounting, etc.

My efforts of mentioning all this in my Tech/Product Blog is that how relevant they prove in giving me a grip & edge for doing Product Management on daily basis. Phase Gate, Optimisations, Filtering, Detailing, Deep diving should become more of a habit that comes naturally while thinking, talking, acting, deciding on things for future growth/Leadership roles.

A word of caution – please do not even think of becoming “Monica” for the same! Phew, that’s OCD.

Mithali Raj & Indian Women Cricket Team – A salute!

Who has not been impressed enough with the recent show of our ladies in the Cricket World Cup 2017 with their gallant march to the Finals by taking one world class team after the other down!

They took everyone by surprise with the inexperience in their team & played excellent knocks of 100s & taking multiple 5 wickets especially by Spinners. Indian team looked inspired, motivated & FRESH! They were wanting to go for the Kill & looking to WIN all the time.

Words fail me to impress Mithali Raj who has become a role model for me for sure with her cool headed & non interfering approach, solid knocks & smiling yet confident personality. Her body language exuberates Modesty, Dignity, Mental Strength, Defyness, Eagerness to prove all wrong against all odds.
Her story has impressed me & am sure so are the stories of 14 other girls who have come against various odds in their lives to perform at the big arena & become a world class player! Its not easy & everyone should know that.

In India, women sports is not really looked upon as a career option after so many years of Independence, Education. Though things have changed & we have had some national heroes like Mary Kom, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Sindhu, PT Usha, Dipa Karmakar, Sakshi Malik recently. But we are nowhere when compared to West & our culture, mindset has to go a long way to change for things on ground to change. Money shall flow, management shall improve if we get more & more acceptance from Society & Families at grass root level.

Perhaps this is the reason why I am so heart-broken at Ladies not winning the Cup. Rest am sure they have done more than their best & have made us so so so Proud while giving us so many moments to cherish & cheer for! Am still rooting for Women IPL to start soon.

Heart goes out to Mithali & Jhulan – am hoping against hope that they will give next World Cup another chance for us as they still have a lot to offer.

Rest am sure, things will change for the better! Amen

Some Blabber More..

Last night dinner with my cousin.. a few thoughts came up, which I have been thinking a lot lately for self improvement, became clearer & stronger further :

  • Confidence to look inside by being objective came from doing decently well at WORK – which is probably not Ideal or recommended but in my case it had to be via Work because it plays an extremely important role in my life.
  • Piush had alot to do with giving this confidence & then mentoring me to look further inside to become a better person – though his recommendations were from work aspects but its not surprising that exactly same qualities are required by me in current life – To be Analytical, Amiable 🙂 always..
  • Sneha’s constant response to my blabbers, traits, behaviours, words were more than helpful – Probably I am indebted to her for Life for this. I used to always think that am high on empathy, concern for others & outward looking while honestly I was only being selfish in all my pursuits by only expressing what I felt was right while ACTUALLY NOT realising what the other person is saying or wanting to say or means or feels. This has been a revelation of sorts to be equally if not more concerned about what the other person is saying, feeling, thinking, wanting.
  • Probably all my relationships have gone wrong at some points coz of my constant need to control & looking inward only – Mac, Rahul, Appy, Shweta Di, Nakul are a few I can think FirstHand.
  • Am not very good at Letting Go! It comes from Impatience, not trusting others to do the Right, not giving space – COMPLETE NO NO!
  • I was not very good at having difficult conversations – but have to learn the art of having a difficult conversation in a calm & peaceful way.
  • I did fear losing others and myself a lot – majorly Fear was making all the decisions which is not the Right way always!
