Learnings from the 3 Khans

Before I started writing this blog – I was worried that I might regret it later as an educated business professional/startup entrepreneur. As a rational responsible individual, I do understand that movies and the stardom in India leads to confusing a lot of immature, uncanny youngsters and impacting them in a wrong way. Especially the fanaticism that exists for stars in our country seems really unexplainable to me. If it reveals anything it is the fact we have not developed or appreciated other importance facets of education, science, defence, agriculture enough to put them as leading faces of our country for our youth to adore.

However, my generation or generation before and after me cannot deny that Bollywood and its leading men/women do impact you in some or the other way. As Mktg professional, am expected to know what are the latest updates around them to know the trends well enough. And amongst them the 3 Khans of Bollywood or Hindi/Indian Film Industry – Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, ShahRukh Khan come out as very influential, powerful, trendsetters, etc. in current scenario. They have been here for 25+ years and today I will try and share my learnings as an individual which can help other youngsters in professional and personal life :

  • Stay United in Staying Independent : They appear aloof yet united at many fronts – seems an invisible cartel getting formed at their end. Yet they function independent of each other.
  • Understand Your Audience, Your strengths & weaknesses – This was something that the 3 of them did very well to be relevant constantly and kept renovating themselves with time. Aamir’s strength was understood to be around making intelligent movies that classes vouch on, Salman always appealed to masses while SRK played on his charm, ease.
  • Be in the News/Public eyes – they know very well how to be in the news and be seen at the right places doing the right things – respecting elders, showcasing patriotism, social causes, etc.
  • Develop Your Close circle of Loyalists – All 3 of them like to be in their comfort zone more or less, though they try to venture out of it sometimes but eventually they move into that zone back. Salman doing dhinka chika slapslick comedy, Aamir becoming preachy, SRK doing that Rahul roles. And you know the biggest surprise – Audience makes it the biggest HIT.
  • Most Imp – Understand in and out of your business better than anyone and become a participant than a viewer in that : After MBA, I have really started appreciating their business sense alot. They know the costs, budget, ROI, Profitability, projections, forecasting, branding – they are students and professors of MBA in their own rights though I won’t like to hear their lecture.
  • Be a Good Human Being & Stay politically correct : I respect them for that. I don’t think I can say that any of them is a bad person or someone I really detest and perhaps this is why they work with everyone.
  • Your best work might not be most successful : Salman’s Tere Naam, SRK’s Kabhi Han Kabhi Na, Aamir’s Tare Zameen Par might not be their biggest success but they make them what they are as actors and craftsmen.
  • Above all, love to act a bit all the time, you are being watched everytime!

Hope their hysteria motivates millions to be better professionals and human beings.

Notting Hill – my all time favourite movie..

Am a hopeless romantic & optimistic at heart..

It is most proven by the kind of movies I adore & are on my repeat list which i prefer watching during my times distress..

Notting Hill happens to be one of them, which just makes me smile & feel good about being nice, simple, basic at heart as being most precious!
To me that’s the power of cinema – to communicate the simplest of feelings, thoughts, ideas in the most profound & touching manner.

Julia Roberts & Hugh Grant won me over with this film – I shall adore them always coz of this one film, though their previous & current credentials are great too but for me Notting Hill is all they mean when I think about them.

My favourite scenes are plenty – the gathering of friends alongwith the park scene with “You say it best…” playing in background is surreal but nice 🙂
The last bookshop scene with the standout dialogue of “am just another girl asking a boy to love her..” is brilliantly composed, written & performed. The way it ends on high with the character of Hugh, who was so uncomfortable with the limelight & press, having to become a part of the press to make Julia stay while all cameras, attention turns to him!

Pairing is perfect though I read Julia Roberts charging a bomb & Hugh Grant making not so nice comments about her mouth size (Come On Grant), still they did each scene with so much care & involvement.
It actually felt that this is Julia Roberts the most popular star, falling in love with a nobody in England, cute but nobody. They have never looked better, seemed the perfect timing for the movie to be made(early to mid 30s).
With 16 years having passed past the making of movie & how precious it holds a position in our hearts still proves itself to be a timeless classic.

This movie makes me believe more in miracles, in love & giving everyone around more chances than being judgemental.

There are so many little things that I want to remember – the painting, book shop, william james, how julia wanted normal so bad, how hugh was dazzled at first but felt normal slowly..how polite & gentle everyone is for everybody else.. how they fix their first date in between a 5min interview questions.. the last scene on the bench of the park.. how perfect they look while walking together !

You shall be definitely one of those I would wanna meet when I come up there! One day we all have to.. how honourably we live, what difference we make towards lives of others.. how well we live is most important!
You did your bit extremely well – equally or better than Bhagat Singh or Gandhiji if I might say..

Courage, Commitment & Compassion – the 3 words companies/institutions try to imbibe for hundreds of years! You showed in a span of 17 hours…

There have been heroes before/after you but none I can recall have lived the way you did and has made me think so much – wonderful student, daughter, sister and above all a committed professional..
In short everything, middle class girls like me aspire to be and become.. but do we go to the extent to ensure we cover that extra mile..
I hope I do when the moment calls for it.. in wisdom and righteousness..

Am sorry that I was ignorant about your achievements till now..
How minuscule my life appears after seeing your mammoth achievements..
You did what only heroes or rather superheroes do..
(4 points – cautioning the pilots, being a calm mind to take care of passengers, presence of mind to hide american passports, when they open fired – you made way for people to rush out and died saving 3 young kids!)

Comparing what have I done in my professional life so far – tried to give my best to help customers, distributors out, earn crores for my company, tried to develop digital solutions..Tried to come out as a compassionate person..
But I have not done something outstanding….!

God is fair, Life is zero sum game to ensure we get what we deserve! Am sure you got and will get more than you deserve..!

Amen!
