I have chosen a subject very close to my heart & mind since long …

SUSTAINABLE CREATIVITY…

I personally feel Creativity is great & has to be nurtured.. esp for the corporate space where one is chasing numbers, KPIs, KRAs & hardly has time to think consumers..

So one has to think Creative & Scale while at work or else in my humble opinion you are just not adding value!

I understand the importance of Business Philosophies, Business Visions, Business Leadership Styles with the exposure so far & lately have been reading a lot upon them.

But somewhere my mind tells me that only when one is creating something new & is able to convince internal, external stakeholders for the same does one take one’s company forward and via that the whole society/generation forward.

Let me give some example, Gandhi for all the controversial discussions around creating an emotional blackmail/socialism model was at least able to create something called AHIMSA that is being re-called by the global generations much later.. even if it is debated which is the whole purpose!

Similarly Invention of Electricity, Revolutions, Renaissance have seemed to be extremely tough brainstorming times but have been successful in pushing the society forward..

Since Ancient times, every Kingdom also has tried to nurture the art, dance, creativity, etc. for the free flow of ideas, thoughts, talents, etc. across geographies, caste, creed, religion but without beating the overall purpose of the Preamble, Constitution or Administration! So Welfare & growth of people first however give them a source of relief, outwardness, dream for a better lifestyle.

Even in our Indian Society –  we have the majority who is inspired by the Bollywood & its glamour which is not great always…  but point is anything new, disruptive always catches the eye & makes people inspired, think, talk, maybe even act upon (sadly the last one is toughest yet most critical).

I also feel, in a country like India with a population of 1.3 Billion & life dazzling, bazzling through roads & streets or now digitally on mobile phones – ideas emerge by the micro second, many repeat, many overlapping, many spoken, many hidden, majority waste 😉 a lot waiting to be implemented..

My personal Bias is towards the Rural Youth as I feel they see the root cause & really wish to resolve it – just need to be guided & supported to resolve it…

If somehow a Design Lab can connect with this Rural Thinking Lab – we have a SURE SHOT WINNER in hand ! Godrej has been able to develop one, time shall tell what kind of products & solutions come out of it.

Amen! GodSpeed!

Old Times – Old Charm

There is an old charm to the old world – very difficult to describe it, its something you feel. Its hidden deep and many a times marked by the dogmas of hindrance, inertia, not giving in however once these are set a side you find a deep aroma of peace, love, warmth, compassion, nostalgia and attachment – my growing up years in smaller cities & working in rural areas have given me something to cherish forever.

It is very different from the modern world where everything is out in the open & too much expressed or exposed where kids grow up too soon & know everything too well before they should.

It is a world where kids like Swami grow up – oblivion to the real world and only worrying about their mango trees, summer holidays & friends sprees. It is a world where kids truly dream in the night and wonder if that can be really achieved.

This world also has tough times and especially has tough people, situations and heartbreaking/disillusioning/dark phases. But that is how a true person of matter is made.

It is a beautiful world where trees are green, birds & butterfly fly free, rain, heat, winter come in shared proportions where a smile is met with a genuine smile and a Hi with a courteous Hello.
It is a Good World My Friend.

Dedicated to my Mom, Dadi & Naniji – who taught me how to appreciate the beauty of those little things.

(Just thought of this while going through Pandeymonium – autobiography of Piyush Pandey & especially his childhood chapter, the only person I feel truly knows Marketing in Indian Consumer Commercial Space)

India – a method to the chaos

This statement is quite casually put to explain the way India operates to people trying to understand Indian system. Even scientifically a lot of institutions have  tried to find justification to the above statement with no consolidated results to showcase so far. But it won’t be wrong to suggest that above statement DOES explain a lot what is wrong and still correct with Indian system. Someone can hear a song – “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani.. (Still heart is Indian despite everything).

The traffic is the first and perhaps biggest system management representation of how Indians operate, how they flung the rules, how considerate they are towards others. Not to say that everyone is bad or everything happening here is wrong as 1000+ people die everyday in India on road but as the optimist shall say 1crore+ people are saved as well :). The requirement is definitely for making traffic laws and law guardians ie traffic policemen/ladies more empowered – increase their salaries, make them more accountable, train them, help them in becoming no less efficient than an army officer or an investment banker for that matter.

Same can be said for law & order situation in India – the police administration, the judicial system are pillars without which any democracy or country will fail. In India, there are millions of ways of finding loopholes in here to find a way for yourself. A highly functioning country cannot afford to have 1 in 2 policemen who have oodles of pounds added around the tyre region who fail to empathise forget giving help to the needy. Again, a revamp with focus on their basic qualification, aptitude, attitude, fitness, salary structure is in the order.

Agriculture, Municipal societies, Education, Medical, Government services sectors are representing above examples’ chaos as well.

There have been a few sectors which have seen privatisation post the liberalisation policy of 1992 – Aviation, Telecom/Communication, IT services, Media, Food & Beverages, FMCG, Banking, Pharmaceuticals, Construction/Infrastructure are chief I can recall among others. These sectors have seen practices from abroad coming into implementation, a good level of competition to out do each other, high influx of educated youngsters joining them, consistent growth & contribution towards GDP, certain positioning at international scenario for India.
Not to stress that jobs in these sectors are in high demand at engineering, MBA and other colleges.

My country is great – nobody can deny or takeaway that from me. Am moment and again filled with the optimism for the highest notch that my country can reach. I am also one of those old school people who value the rich culture, family values, history values that my country keeps close to Her heart. Though what is required along with the Govt reforms is change of approach/attitude of my own countrymen/ladies – to not think of themselves first at every opportunity. In public places – think for the public too, while in a queue – keep your patience for others too, while driving or being driven – respect other people’s comforts/lives too.

Today, my country is highest growing nation in the world – its no mean feat achieved basis hard work of countrymen favoured by govt policies. Let us not stop till we are able to provide every single Indian anywhere in the world with clean food to eat, clean water to drink, healthy air to breathe, clothes to cover, shed to protect heads and few other basic amenities along with respect, dignity to withstand anything.

Love, Power & Amen!

My Wishlist for one of my States & its People

I get asked about my loyalties to which of the indian states a lot – as I have spent 13 years in U.P, 8 in Gujarat, 2 in Jharkhand, 3 in Maharashtra, 2 in Delhi, 1 in Karnataka majorly. My name is non – Indian, My surname is non detrimental in terms of nailing my origin state. My way of speaking Hindi tells people I am from North, my thoughts & lifestyle from West – so people get confused and I enjoy it as I like calling myself Indian as an identity and that’s it.

To answer the question in response to their curiosity – I tend to divide the response between North and West depending on who is asking the question and in what relevance. I sometimes also tend to explain my family background to some and how I am truly Indian in terms of my loyalties to a state.

However, if there is one State I genuinely wish to grow & come out from its old tittering historical chains – it is my state of birth and ancestors – U.P. This state was the battleground of Independence struggle, even Mahabharat, Ramayan are based here, from cultural, historical, political standpoint – I do not think any state can match U.P.’s relevance.

And it is sad to see its state in shatters – I do not have to go very far to understand it. I have toured multiple states for education, work, sports and U.P. stands out in terms of its potential of resources, population, relevance but the lifestyle, living conditions, infrastructure, facilities, law & order, women’s security, revenue generation, industrial development being far behind from other states.

The political aspects has not helped however if I have to blame one thing then I will blame the People living here themselves. Be it the man, woman, kid, elderly – they all seem to have happily accepted their grim state of affairs and love being not optimistic about future. My parents always pushed me to do well in studies however I am sure apart from that they did not have much recommendations on what does good things in life mean. 99% people I have met here do not understand the meaning of a good lifestyle, a relaxed, healthy, smiling, optimistic, quality, modernly equipped lifestyle.
They tend to somehow believe that being depressed, emotional, old school is the way ahead. I wish they will change.

Lastly and most importantly, I wish the men of this state to understand the real meaning of machoism, chauvinism and give space, respect & equal importance to women in their lives. I wish for the girls in this state to be able to achieve what they dream for and are not given any less opportunity than boys or kids of other states. (HeforShe)

Learnings from the 3 Khans

Before I started writing this blog – I was worried that I might regret it later as an educated business professional/startup entrepreneur. As a rational responsible individual, I do understand that movies and the stardom in India leads to confusing a lot of immature, uncanny youngsters and impacting them in a wrong way. Especially the fanaticism that exists for stars in our country seems really unexplainable to me. If it reveals anything it is the fact we have not developed or appreciated other importance facets of education, science, defence, agriculture enough to put them as leading faces of our country for our youth to adore.

However, my generation or generation before and after me cannot deny that Bollywood and its leading men/women do impact you in some or the other way. As Mktg professional, am expected to know what are the latest updates around them to know the trends well enough. And amongst them the 3 Khans of Bollywood or Hindi/Indian Film Industry – Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, ShahRukh Khan come out as very influential, powerful, trendsetters, etc. in current scenario. They have been here for 25+ years and today I will try and share my learnings as an individual which can help other youngsters in professional and personal life :

  • Stay United in Staying Independent : They appear aloof yet united at many fronts – seems an invisible cartel getting formed at their end. Yet they function independent of each other.
  • Understand Your Audience, Your strengths & weaknesses – This was something that the 3 of them did very well to be relevant constantly and kept renovating themselves with time. Aamir’s strength was understood to be around making intelligent movies that classes vouch on, Salman always appealed to masses while SRK played on his charm, ease.
  • Be in the News/Public eyes – they know very well how to be in the news and be seen at the right places doing the right things – respecting elders, showcasing patriotism, social causes, etc.
  • Develop Your Close circle of Loyalists – All 3 of them like to be in their comfort zone more or less, though they try to venture out of it sometimes but eventually they move into that zone back. Salman doing dhinka chika slapslick comedy, Aamir becoming preachy, SRK doing that Rahul roles. And you know the biggest surprise – Audience makes it the biggest HIT.
  • Most Imp – Understand in and out of your business better than anyone and become a participant than a viewer in that : After MBA, I have really started appreciating their business sense alot. They know the costs, budget, ROI, Profitability, projections, forecasting, branding – they are students and professors of MBA in their own rights though I won’t like to hear their lecture.
  • Be a Good Human Being & Stay politically correct : I respect them for that. I don’t think I can say that any of them is a bad person or someone I really detest and perhaps this is why they work with everyone.
  • Your best work might not be most successful : Salman’s Tere Naam, SRK’s Kabhi Han Kabhi Na, Aamir’s Tare Zameen Par might not be their biggest success but they make them what they are as actors and craftsmen.
  • Above all, love to act a bit all the time, you are being watched everytime!

Hope their hysteria motivates millions to be better professionals and human beings.

We kids of 90s and young working consumers of 2010s..

We, kids born in late eighties, were lucky to be born in an era where the economic independence was ushering in and hence we have seen the likes of McDonald’s, Dominoz coming into our lives when we kids used to bargain eating there with our parents.
More importantly we have luckily lived our lives before mobile phones and internet became irreplaceable items in our lives. We valued our family times, festivals, meals, gully cricket, once in a year visit to restaurant and movie theatre.
Summer vacation was about visiting our maternal grandparents home.

We were kids who are now in late 20s and hence growing into the main force of work as well as consumer force.
Our parents have been mostly govt officials and we have spent our lives with limited resources and small houses with verandah, gardens mostly govt quarters.

We have seen the struggle side of our & our parents’ lives yet we were decently provided for food, clothes, games and yet there was intense pressure on us to perform and do well in studies. Only way we could exceed in life and secure ourselves was through studies.

We also did that whatever best we could, as a result you see the big IT force being developed and now the startup force growing. We were expected to behave ourselves and work hard on all subjects, go through the grind. The topics of relaxation, laid back, take it easy, etc. were alien to us till we got our feet on the ground on our own. We were not given pocket money and were expected to come back home straight after school, college.

Today’s kids are so different, though they are smarter, sharper, more aware.. I feel they lack intent to exceed.

Time will tell more..
