How My Media Aversion Has Helped Me!

It was a hard thought decision but something I should have done long back to be a much STRONGER & MORE CONFIDENT Human Being! Yes You Heard It, Long Back!!

I stopped quite a lot of Media Inflows towards me (my ears, eyes, most importantly Mind), in order to do that I did the following :

  • Stopped Reading All the Media websites & Apps (TOI was banned long back, NDTV, IndiaToday, IBN, etc.)
  • Removed TV Subscription (Best Decision Ever)
  • Shortened Facebook time to <5mins/week & diverting the remaining time to reading, linkedin, twitter, medium on filtered interests/subjects.
  • Forming my Viewpoints towards everything based on my own Research (well judged resources + Authentic sources) rather than word services of others
  • Adjudging the Media, Film world, Cricketers in my life what they are – PRESSTITUTES!
  • Avoiding all so called friends/influencers who promoted the Above or spoke mostly about the same

This happened as a result of above :

  • The filtered content was self approved & self adjudged
  • Got more time to do my research & form my own opinions based on topics that I was curious about, which is much better than being involuntarily educated at topics of no interest or motivation
  • Found & Relied on much informed company of intellectuals & common believers
  • I could only focus on what I WANTED FROM MYSELF !! I COULD SEE MYSELF AS A CLEAN SLATE & JUDGE MY BREATHE, MY ACTIONS, MY WAVES, RAYS, ENERGY IN A COMPLETE IMPARTIAL LIGHT
  • PM, Startups, Tech, VCs, Design, Statistics, World Politics & Trade, Travel, Clicking, Values, Ethics, History, Human Psychology, Sports (Quality), Social Entrepreneur – these are subjects that I know am not going to leave till the end of my breath! So happy to have discovered them as interests, serious hobbies, passions.
  • I can see my Vision & Dreams alot more clearly & am much more determined than ever to achieve them by building small blocks & gathering people around.

AB Testing is a Cultural & Personal Choice

Ittakes a lot number of weeks of research into white papers of statistics, informative articles on application, Live blogs for examples hunting, speaking to relevant stakeholders in competition & outside companies to discuss & link it with your current situation & problem statements to finally conform on your Approach.

I did the same with AB Testing!

And in all fairness, I have to admit that this has to be one of the most Surreal experiences since I realised there was a missing piece I was not including in the whole Picture/Frame/Painting of Product Design Thought Process.

AB Testing is critical to make your Product/Campaigns/Analytics/ Development Decision making simple & obvious decision making come out with an astounding clarity once AB Testing is conducted.
Plus how important it is to be persistent & have patience with the tests (design, conducting, results) — to know when to stop & when to start again.

There are two places where conducting AB Testing is a MUST :

  • Once when the prototypes of your App Key Pages are ready & you must know the initial response to them from your target consumer personas.
  • Second, before doing the campaigns & scaling the features/products — knowing the intricacies details in the form of headline, text, image, theme, colour palette, etc.

A few things must have technical :

  • AB Testing tool —

for beginners : VWO/Optimisely like SaaS tool ;

for mature organisations : Building the capability from scratch

for organisations in between who wish advanced readymade tool — I would recommend the hybrid way by using an open platform like Wasabi which can be customised to your requirements.

  • Good Quality Team with understanding of Statistics, SaaS Tools, Consumer Behavioural Analysis
  • Data Mart/Warehouse with access to Transactional Data as well as Online Behavioural Data with necessary cuts for segmentation basis Business Intelligence

A Few things in terms of Soft Power :

  • Open Mind — ready to question obvious right answers (infact more if they are obvious)
  • Capability to deep dive & look at intrinsic details
  • Collaborate with different teams/people to check if the findings or the direction of the findings are correct — this in my understanding is the most POTENT!

Organisations must insist their people to only come to leaders once they have collaborative evidences to move in a certain direction.

It may so happen that after spending significant time also — you may not come to an conclusive evidence & one should be open & amiable about the same & not push for an evidence for the sake of it.

I must thank quite a few people for the same but most of all Booking.com to highlight that there is something missing in my thought process — the webinar by Lukas was really helpful!

Its That Kinda India

Yes India is growing & India shall keep growing fast for next few decades! The standards of livings shall improve, the infrastructure shall go up, Businesses shall prosper, education & qualifications shall go up!

There will be alot we will miss & complain – but lets keep that for some other day!

Today, I wish to mention that how Different India will be once it grows up more! We have examples of plenty of developed economies in Democracy & Communist spaces – USA, Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan. But India is coming up different – very different from others.

The colours, shades of Culture, Family orientations, Concerns/Fears form very much part of the pattern developing!
It does seem confused many a times – not here neither there. You see alot of aspirations, a lot of efforts not getting completely through, alot of announcements at govt & institution levels, alot of drama in the names of celebrity lives, the great divide between the few privileged & majority deprived, alot of arrogance & over confidence at Youth level, etc. etc.
But it seems to be GIVING ITS OWN FLAVOUR to the whole story!

India shall be dominant in many spaces for sure – Sports, Fashion, Movies, Technology, Health, Medical, Manpower, Agriculture, etc. etc. – everything will have its own roadmap period to achievement & some even might not however the lives of everyone shall be improved without differentiation & that is a DREAM we millennial have grown up with!

One thing is very clear that there is a huge section of Flamboyancy which has found its place in the Indian Social Fabric – lead by movie stars, cricketers + league sports (I would love to slip in National Women’s Cricket & National Football Team), Industrialists, Fashionistas which could be too much into your face many times but it also provides the much needed energy & visibility to Keep Performing, Going, Life in general.

My wish – there was enough importance & visibility & encouragement given to the process + effort that goes behind making our Country Great in fields of science, engineering, administration, law & order, etc. Its these struggles & how people excel despite this is what defines Human Success in my opinion.

Second thing very clear to me is that there is this huge section of aspirational middle class audience which wants fast fame, fast growth, they want to emulate these so called “media created stars” in terms of lifestyle, relationships, fashion genres, etc. It looks very scary & downhill for me + am sure there is a better way to attain that.

Regarding my own space in it – am sure there will be one amongst many/few 🙂

Human’s Stay on Earth

Have been thinking lately (these thoughts are definitely not based on any recent developments but are based on my observations, interactions, discussions, reading over the past known years).. am quite certain of following views as well :

  • I do not think that Humans were supposed to breed on this planet, this planet was (if) created then was meant for appreciation, wonder, happiness, peace, plentifulness, etc. As story goes Adam n Eve faulted & every one later are bearing the (black) fruits of it!
  • Coming on this earth, in which family, country, religion, etc. are not chosen by anyone. However what one believes, controls, speaks, acts, behaves, etc. are & should be owned by the individual herself/himself. Saying this is how it happens coz of background or circumstances is simply a poor craftsman
  • Now that one has come on this planet & got a life, body, mind, heart – one should make the max use of it to lead a fulfilling life which does not harp on any negativity, demeans others lives, compares, hurts oneself or others, etc.
  • Whatever life one gets – 10/30/50/70 years – one should lead a healthy meaningful life while trying to uplift others around, give hope/faith amongst others. Create & sustain happiness while discarding materialism.
  • In order to achieve this, one is gifted skills/knowledge/awareness which are to be made the most use of to uplift themselves as well as others around them. Acting selfish is going against the basic purpose of this life.

Today, let us discuss the importance of “Art of Organising” to be relevant in today’s Management Space.

The Optimum Art of Organising & Planning to ensure efficiency however not causing too much delay & redundancy is a difficult Art to Manage.
It requires attention to detail, understanding of situations + people, right amount of patience to hold your horses or speak at the most opportune time. Above all it required alot of maturity, analytical skills & calmness to manage all the situations.

In my understanding, this is quite the skillset a qualified MBA is supposed to have to be an effective manager & leader. In same breath let me mention the subjects of MBA course in my understanding prove to be most critical for a leader in due course of their professional careers :

  • Organisational Behaviour : Though its difficult for young MBA minds to absorb & estimate the impact of all the topics in a class of 20+ hours, it is the subject which cuts across all students & is applicable throughout the careers every single moment
  • Game Theory : If one subject can teach the outcome probability best then it is this subject – one should always be prepared & calculating to know the best outcome possible in every situation/event for themselves or colleagues or business, etc. Its quite the lovely topic
  • Operational Research : This subject teaches the art of balancing different sets, values, variables, constants to ultimately reach your optimum goal of efficient results.

There are other subjects worth mentioning though matter a lot on how they are taught – Managerial Skills, Leadership Skills, Strategy, Accounting, etc.

My efforts of mentioning all this in my Tech/Product Blog is that how relevant they prove in giving me a grip & edge for doing Product Management on daily basis. Phase Gate, Optimisations, Filtering, Detailing, Deep diving should become more of a habit that comes naturally while thinking, talking, acting, deciding on things for future growth/Leadership roles.

A word of caution – please do not even think of becoming “Monica” for the same! Phew, that’s OCD.

Sometimes you are just out of ideas for simple reasons like you have been back from a vacation & too lazy to pick up strings again or things @ work are moving slower than expected or for even simpler reason that its too hot & humid outside to let you breathe freely 🙂

However, still leaving those reason behind – trying to push through the world we all Love to create & thrive in “Product-O-Tech” sharing some recent thoughts.

Google I/O was great, some excellent points covered :

  • Google Assistant on iPhone
  • Android Go
  • Google Lens
  • Google Home
  • Google Daydream
  • Google Seurat
  • Android O
  • Google Jobs
  • Google new AI chip for cloud storage
  • VR Headset
  • Google Transactions
  • 360 video on big screen
  • notification dots
  • more shared experiences in VR
  • Instant apps for everybody
  • Android controlling car

Seems Mr. Pichai is doing his Job well by pushing the agenda of Google Ventures while keeping the Google Main business – Search going up.

Meanwhile, Facebook CEO Mr. Zuckerberg also happened to give quite an impressive speech at Harvard & encouraging some interesting concepts on social equality, dream realisation, youth empowerment – this guy has to be Indian 😉 he talks a lot of Drama seriously.

Microsoft has also shown some serious plans for their AI & Surface laptops which tells they are in no mood to give in!

How does this whole calculate down – The serious Big companies are definitely going to push the agenda towards a more internet & tech empowered World – AI, AR/VR, IOT, Cloud, Big Data Solutions are going to rule the world.
But what they want all the time to make themselves relevant is understanding consumer behaviour around existing & new Tech, to take the adaptations deeper & make them acceptable for every market.

For me – that’s a bigger innovation to how to convince a consumer it is meant for you & help you to lead a better life coz then you have changed their lives forever.
And perhaps NO its not always correct for the Tech guys to take all the credit, time the Business People who actually make the ground ready & work for a quick launch & a quicker feedback, adaptations to get their due !

I have chosen a subject very close to my heart & mind since long …

“SUSTAINABLE CREATIVITY…”

I personally feel Creativity is great & has to be nurtured.. esp for the corporate space where one is chasing numbers, KPIs, KRAs & hardly has time to think consumers..

So one has to think Creative & Scale while at work or else in my humble opinion you are just not adding value!

I understand the importance of Business Philosophies, Business Visions, Business Leadership Styles with the exposure so far & lately have been reading a lot upon them.

But somewhere my mind tells me that only when one is creating something new & is able to convince internal, external stakeholders for the same does one take one’s company forward and via that the whole society/generation forward.

Let me give some example, Gandhi for all the controversial discussions around creating an emotional blackmail/socialism model was at least able to create something called AHIMSA that is being re-called by the global generations much later.. even if it is debated which is the whole purpose!

Similarly Invention of Electricity, Revolutions, Renaissance have seemed to be extremely tough brainstorming times but have been successful in pushing the society forward..

Since Ancient times, every Kingdom also has tried to nurture the art, dance, creativity, etc. for the free flow of ideas, thoughts, talents, etc. across geographies, caste, creed, religion but without beating the overall purpose of the Preamble, Constitution or Administration! So Welfare & growth of people first however give them a source of relief, outwardness, dream for a better lifestyle.

Even in our Indian Society –  we have the majority who is inspired by the Bollywood & its glamour which is not great always…  but point is anything new, disruptive always catches the eye & makes people inspired, think, talk, maybe even act upon (sadly the last one is toughest yet most critical).

I also feel, in a country like India with a population of 1.3 Billion & life dazzling, bazzling through roads & streets or now digitally on mobile phones – ideas emerge by the micro second, many repeat, many overlapping, many spoken, many hidden, majority waste 😉 a lot waiting to be implemented..

My personal Bias is towards the Rural Youth as I feel they see the root cause & really wish to resolve it – just need to be guided & supported to resolve it…

If somehow a Design Lab can connect with this Rural Thinking Lab – we have a SURE SHOT WINNER in hand ! Godrej has been able to develop one, time shall tell what kind of products & solutions come out of it.

Its my 4th Update in 2 months but its not too late to admit that I do not consider myself a techie or a geek! I love having a life without gadgets or electricity for that matter – amidst pure nature & seeking, providing organic life with the basics.

However, Alas, we are in 21st Century which is moving fast & needs solutions/answers even faster – so people like me try & ploy our minds/education into providing.

I do feel that I think consumers & that is my greatest strength plus since I understand technology of mobile + telecom + e-commerce – I am able to answer a lot of queries. Having said that, I have to read zillion articles/GIFs/Infographics/Apps/Websites to be updated on what’s happening across the world by the unit of a millionth of a second!

So today I will be sharing some of my favourite App Designs but before that I want to make a point about how designs evolve.

Dictionary definition of Design is : “a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is made.

Another definition is : “to plan and fashion the form and structure of an object, work of art, decorative scheme, etc.”

Basically, Design can start from a dream or a word or a thought or a breath of air to be translated into ppt/excel/drawing board/software/camera/blueprint/magazine/ newspaper/ mobile app/ website, etc.

And that’s what makes design so generic yet so special!

And here’s to SUSTAINABLE CREATIVITY!!

My approach for a product manager/growth hacker/online marketer/data scientist :

  • Do loads of research – Humoungus – Primary, Secondary – for a good 1/2 months continuously via diff geographic & sets.. and keep on adding to your thoughts
  • Form your vision – short term given the current circumstances & long term where you see your product in next 3-5 years
  • Work towards it – getting processes, resources & adding 2-3 key innovation tests to it…
  • Keep a constant tab over all key actionable (make it 80 : 20 rule) – work mornings, nights, weekends but ensure control over non – negotiable points
  • Heckle well with all stakeholders from tech, alliances, marketing, vendors!
  • Get it LIVE & Optimise it basis customer feedbacks..
  • Launch it in the Mkt… with some exciting proposition & create a classy differentiated campaign as per the need
  • Measure the performance & Optimise the campaigns…
